Year-end financial planning: 2021 budget deadlines for Indiana governments

Although it seems like we have just started the fiscal year, it is time to start thinking about preparing your 2021 budget.

If you are new to your position, the budget deadlines[1] for you and your staff are listed below.  Even if you are an experienced budgeting planning professional, this timetable is a valuable refresher.

[1] This is the general timetable for Indiana. Exceptions and differences exist, such as for appointed boards and special districts. Please refer to the specific budget adoption requirements for your taxing unit.

Budget forms must be completed in the Indiana Gateway budget application. Once your budget has been submitted through Gateway and certified by the DLGF, the information is available for public viewing. The DLGF’s deadline to certify budgets is Dec. 31, 2020 (or Jan. 15, 2021 if the unit is issuing new debt after Dec. 31, 2020 or files a shortfall excess levy appeal).

Because of the somewhat unforgiving nature of the statutory process, it is always a good idea to have someone take a second look at your budget before its adoption. This is especially true in light of the current budget complexities related to COVID-19.
