Client background
This company is a growing clothing producer as well as a retailer. They make tough, functional and comfortable clothing for men and women. They have grown to prominence with a unique marketing style and high-quality clothing.
The business challenge
The client had an order management system that was old and heavily customized. Reporting from the system was done in a variety of fashions based on years of different individuals working on it. They were looking to revamp their strategy and architecture to upgrade their existing reporting infrastructure as part of the system migration. They engaged Baker Tilly Digital in the early phases to roll-out a new order management system. The client was hindered in two ways by their old system:
- The complexity of existing data processing jobs made them extremely fragile and expensive to maintain
- Given the fragility of the existing data processing jobs, performing new advanced analytics was almost impossible
Strategy and solution
Baker Tilly Digital started with an assessment of their existing data processing systems:
- Reviewing processes to document hundreds of job dependencies creating a complete data map of inputs and outputs
- Creating a new modern data warehouse framework that would allow for historical reporting from the existing system and set the foundation for an improved data and analytics program
By analyzing existing systems and dependencies, Baker Tilly Digital was able to provide a road map to best fit the client’s analytical maturity and current capabilities. Analyzing thousands of client data scripts to identify dependencies provided insight into data we had not reviewed before and allowed us to demonstrate the level of complexity and challenges that they needed to be addressed.
The client was able to use our strategic approach as a guide for scoping the next phase of work and to solve the current reporting issues. This positioned the client to improve their analytical capabilities across the organization, understand how to grow their business and mitigate challenges.
