Michael Schmittlein is a principal with Baker Tilly’s real estate and construction practices. Michael has more than 10 years of experience in providing tax and business advisory services to the construction and real estate industry, including those with international inbound and outbound investments and REITs. He specializes in issues specific to real estate investment, private equity funds, developers, operating and development businesses, as well as their owners.

  • Provides tax compliance and planning services for construction companies, real estate developers, owners, operators and investment funds, including choosing the right entity and overall entity structuring
  • Assists clients with transaction structuring in order to convert real estate appreciation from ordinary income to capital gains
  • Consults on 704(b) and 704(c) analysis and capital account maintenance, including complex allocation models and distribution waterfall calculations
  • Provides tax compliance and advisory services for REITs, including acquisition and due diligence, E&P and 1099-DIV reporting and quarterly REIT testing
  • Assists with international tax matters including “in bound” and “out bound” tax structuring related to U.S. tax filing requirements
  • Experience working with high-net-worth individuals, including personal income tax, gift and estate planning.
