Risk Advisory Director Corey Parker finds joy in balancing his passion for helping clients with his work as a professional referee in Major League Soccer.
“Refereeing is a thrill — it keeps me active and engaged in a process that requires constant self-analysis and also gives me a chance to be involved in an awesome global sport,” said Corey. “And it’s actually a lot like the work we do in Risk Advisory — both require us to spend a great deal of time preparing for new experiences and challenging environments.
For Corey, his two careers enhance each other. “My clients and team are always asking about my soccer career, and it’s a great source of conversation. Soccer is a universal passion for so many people, so it’s a fantastic way to connect and helps to build relationships.”
In 2021, Corey had the opportunity to referee at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, and in 2022 he fulfilled a lifelong dream by refereeing at the World Cup games in Qatar.
Having a supportive team, a supportive family (Corey’s wife, Karri, also works at Baker Tilly) and the freedom and flexibility to work remotely has made it all possible.
“My Baker Tilly colleagues have been a fantastic support system for me over the years. Not only have we learned how to effectively work in a remote capacity, we’ve embraced it as an organization. And the technological advances we've made make it easy for me to work from anywhere in the world.”
Now, Corey’s daughter is starting her own youth soccer “career.” “It’s a blast watching the little kids run around the field,” he laughed. “No matter what level you play, it’s a game that brings so much joy.”
