Evaluating electricity power projects

Municipal electric and gas utility implements process for aligning electricity power projects

The business challenge

As their business grew and became more complex, a large municipal electric and gas utility found they needed to develop a systematic approach to evaluating electrification initiatives and projects to ensure alignment with the company’s vision and core values. With multiple strategic initiatives competing for attention and resources, the company needed a consistent methodology for governance and strategic understanding of these initiatives.

The solution

The team worked with the company representatives and members of senior management to develop a repeatable process. Project components included:

  • A uniform evaluation methodology consistent with the company’s core values
  • A uniform format and information to support faster and more effective decision-making
  • A quantifiable methodology to aid in comparative decision making and assessment of business impact
  • A methodology to appropriately assess risks to all stakeholder groups
  • A methodology to evaluate organizational impacts, stakeholder identification and depth of change

The impact

As a result of the team’s work, an understandable and repeatable evaluation format was developed, allowing senior management to more easily evaluate large quantities of information for decision-making. The evaluation format also incorporated an assessment of the organizational change impact. The adopted methodology was derived from and aligned with the company’s vision and core values.
