Baker Tilly Named Metro DC Corporate Partner of the Year by National Association of Black Accountants

Firm recognized for ongoing support for diverse and inclusive workplaces

TYSONS, Va. (May 9, 2018) – The National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (NABA) Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Chapter recently named Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly) its Corporate Partner of the Year.

The award was presented during the 39th Annual Evening with NABA Scholarship and Awards Reception on Friday, April 27, at the Sheraton Silver Spring Hotel. “Baker Tilly’s work with NABA exemplifies the association’s mantra of ‘Lifting As We Climb’ and serves as an inspiration to us and others,” Tennyle L. Walker, NABA event chair, said. “Baker Tilly was nominated by fellow NABA peers, and based on their outstanding contributions to the chapter during the year; we are honored to present Baker Tilly with this award.”

The cornerstone of Baker Tilly’s diversity initiative is its Supporting Opportunity, Advancement and Recognition for all (SOAR) program. SOAR fosters education, awareness and opportunities for diverse populations in accounting, management and related disciplines, and is just one of several Baker Tilly programs designed to support diversity in the professional workplace.

“We work closely with NABA, ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals For America) and Ascend (Organizations for Pan-Asian leaders),” Shin Nan Goto, senior manager and Baker Tilly’s Washington, D.C. SOAR committee chair, said. “We are committed to fostering diversity within our firm, and we think it’s vitally important to strengthen diversity within our profession as well.”

Monica Modi Dalwadi, a Baker Tilly partner and member of the firm’s national diversity & inclusion steering committee, outlined Baker Tilly’s efforts to increase diversity. “We do a lot of on-campus recruiting, affinity events and other outreach to provide opportunities for everyone,” she noted. “Diversity in culture and thought benefits us, benefits the industry and benefits society.”

NABA, founded in 1969, is a national organization that seeks to support and create opportunities for minority accounting professionals. The NABA Metro D.C. Chapter Corporate Partnership Program has awarded more than $600,000 in scholarships, as well as provided career and professional development opportunities for its partners.

“Partnering with NABA is a win-win for everyone,” Todd Stokes, Baker Tilly’s managing partner – D.C. metro area, said. “This association enables opportunities for people who want to enter the profession or further their career in accounting or finance. We are proud to be a NABA corporate partner and are honored by this recognition.”
