Insurance company creates data visibility with business first reporting systems

Read this case study to learn how an insurance company created data visibility with business first reporting systems designed to surface the most relevant and accessible content for each set of users.

Client background

This client offers insurance services and coverage for consumers including auto, home, condo, identity theft, umbrella and renters’ insurance. They also offer business insurance services including general business, workers’ comp, loss prevention and premium audit services. The client has been offering insurance products for over 125 years.

The business challenge

The client had little to no visibility into their data generated by a third-party policy administration system. Having no method to integrate claims data sources limited their ability to perform in-depth actuarial analysis and their legacy reporting was unable to incorporate data from new sources. A reactive approach to data quality therefore led to frequent IT interruptions and the lack of visibility into the data meant that business users were unable to make data-driven decisions.

Strategy and solution

Baker Tilly Digital worked collaboratively with stakeholders to design “business first” reporting solutions and quickly diagnose accessibility and latency shortcomings in the existing data platform. In order to address these faults, a data model was architected specifically to meet requirements and involved stakeholders in design, development and testing.

Baker Tilly Digital built data flows that:

  • Processed new system data into the legacy reporting solution and supported existing users
  • Utilized SSIS to stage integrated disparate data sources
  • Set up automated tests to ensure data accuracy and completeness

Baker Tilly Digital produced multiple business-facing solutions, each designed to surface the most relevant and accessible content for each set of users. Due to the implementation of the data model, the client maintained a unified data platform to reduce ongoing maintenance costs for their data team and will now have solutions to enable their future vision.
