OACUBO 2023 Annual Meeting

Capital projects can provide substantial value to higher education institutions but come with significant risk. Join Baker Tilly at the Ohio Association of College and University Business Officers (OACUBO) 106th Annual Meeting as we outline key construction project risks, opportunities and recommendations:

Construction projects in higher education: navigating risks, rewards and opportunities for your institution’s next project

Thursday, April 20, 2023
2:10 – 3 p.m. ET

The session will feature several projects that experienced budget overruns and overcharges, delays, poor workmanship, fraud and abuse. For each example presented, we will discuss the factors that impacted the project, warning signs that were present as well as key controls gaps or controls that failed. We will then share controls improvement recommendations that institutions can implement to mitigate these risks on future projects.

The session will also explore how institutions can benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act and the importance of collaboration between internal audit and the institution's project management professionals, which can help strengthen project controls and provide assurance that the institution has taken the appropriate steps to mitigate project risks and comply with federal requirements.

Meet our presenters:
  • Karen Gries, CPA, Director, Higher Education
  • Bob Zellmer, Senior Manager, Real Estate Advisory
