Bill Wertz Named Corporate Chairman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes
Tuesday, April 14, 2010

WAUWATOSA, WI – The Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter of the Juvenile Research Diabetes Foundation (JDRF) has announced that Bill Wertz, Partner and Regional Market Leader with Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly), will serve as the Corporate Chairman for their annual Walk to Cure Diabetes.

The Walk will take place at the Milwaukee County Zoo on Saturday, September 18, 2010, and has a fundraising goal of $1.1 million. Over 8,000 people participated in the event last year, raising over $1 million for diabetes research.

“It’s great to be working together with JDRF on such an important goal – curing a disease that kills one American every three minutes. The recent statistics are staggering and reveal that health care expenditures surrounding diabetes cost our nation more than $174 billion," says Bill Wertz. “That’s why we at Baker Tilly are committed to raising money for cutting-edge research. By working together, we can make a difference."

JDRF is immensely appreciative of Bill Wertz, corporate chair representing Baker Tilly," said Wendy Hanisch, Executive Director. “This is corporate citizenship at its finest. The commitment of Baker Tilly enables us to accelerate research to find a cure for diabetes. Insulin is not a cure, merely life support for the estimated 3 million Americans suffering from type 1 diabetes and its complications. Research is the only answer."

The Walk to Cure Diabetes is the fastest growing fund raising event in the history of JDRF. Funds are raised through corporate sponsorships, the formation of corporate and family walk teams and the sales of paper sneakers in retail outlets. By the end of FY10, the national Walk program will have raised over $100 million to fund diabetes research.

JDRF is the world’s largest funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research, a disease which strikes in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood but lasts a lifetime, requiring multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump and carries the constant threat of devastating complications including kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke and amputation.

Structured on a business-world model that efficiently and effectively directs resources to research aimed at finding a cure as soon as possible, more than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education. In FY 2009, JDRF provided more than $100.8 million to diabetes research, and is responsible for more than $1.4 billion in direct funding since it was founded. Since 2002, JDRF fundraising activities have provided more than $7.13 million to Southeastern Wisconsin research facilities.

JDRF’s mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
