Baker Tilly Named a Best Accounting Firm for Women by the American Society of Women Accountants

Innovative Paths to Partnership & Other Proven Practices Distinguish 2012's Best Public Accounting Firms for Women

CHICAGO – Progressive public accounting firms are forging new avenues to partner and principal, as demonstrated by Baker Tilly, one of the 2012 Best Public Accounting Firms for Women, as determined by the 2012 Accounting MOVE Project.

This week, the ten 'best' firms were announced by the American Society of Women Accountants and the American Woman’s Society of Certified Public Accountants.

The Best Firms were selected from the 29 firms that participated in the 2012 Accounting MOVE Project, sponsored by the ASWA and AWSCPA, and made possible with the support of Rothstein Kass & Co. and Moss Adams, LLP. Strategic communication firm Wilson-Taylor Associates Inc. designed and manages the project.

Below is Baker Tilly’s winning profile:

Baker Tilly got more than it bargained for in several local mergers-- and was smart enough to keep thriving women's initiatives intact and growing. Fifty-five percent of all managers are women, providing more and more young associates with examples of diverse career paths at the firm. As firms of all sizes rediscover the power and promise of empowering local offices to tailor women's programs in terms that drive local business, Baker Tilly shows the way-- and ensures that the best local ideas are cross-pollinated firm-wide.

Here's what the 'best' firms have in common: top-notch programs and proof that those programs actually retain and advance women to partnership. And, in keeping with the theme of the 2012 Accounting MOVE Report, most of the 'best' firms also demonstrated imagination and innovation in blending community service with professional development.

Firms were ranked on the range, depth and success of programs and workplace culture proven to remove barriers to women's success, especially at midlevel and above. The MOVE methodology pivots on four factors – money, opportunity, vital supports for work/life and entrepreneurship – known to advance women in the workplace.

"Golf isn't the only way develop a book of business. The Best Public Accounting Firms for Women show how to infuse professional development with a greater purpose, so that women can grow their careers and their communities at the same time," said Joanne Cleaver, Wilson-Taylor president.

About the 2012 Accounting MOVE Project

The Best Firms were among the 29 that participated in the 2012 Accounting MOVE Project. Through the project and its sponsoring associations, the American Society of Women Accountants and the American Woman’s Society of Certified Public Accountants, the profession can consistently measure the status of women and collaborate on proven and promising practices that advance and retain women.

Key findings of the 2012 Accounting MOVE Project Executive Report:

  • Strategic community service reaps best rewards when tied to the strategic goals of a firm.
  • Over two-thirds of MOVE accounting firms provide leadership development opportunities through support for non-profits.
  • Firms that measure consistently are finding increases in the number of women in upper middle management.
  • Flexible work options are increasingly tied to the business case by linking programs to productivity gains and customer retention.
  • Firms are improving communication about successful women's initiative programs both internally and externally.

The Accounting MOVE Project research partner is Wilson-Taylor Associates, Inc., which has been measuring and supporting the advancement of women since 1998.
