WASHINGTON (November 5, 2014) – Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly) today announced that Katherine Wiernicki, partner in the firm’s D.C. office, was recently honored by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and Greater Washington Society of CPAs (GWSCPA) as one of five 2014 Women to Watch Awards recipients. Wiernicki, who acts as Baker Tilly’s regional quality leader for assurance and D.C.’s assurance team leader, was recognized in the Experienced Leaders category, which highlights “women who made notable contributions to the accounting profession, their organization, and the development of women as leaders.”
The awards program was established in 2013 to highlight the accomplishments of women in the CPA profession. In addition to Experienced Leaders, other leadership categories in the Women to Watch Awards include Emerging and Community.
A sought-after advisor, Wiernicki avidly believes in the advancement, growth, and development of young professionals. To date, she has mentored more than six emerging leaders into their role as partner and currently acts as a formal and informal mentor and advocate for six senior managers as they navigate their professional career paths. She serves on Baker Tilly’s Growth and Retention of Women (GROW) Committee and is frequently invited to speak to various groups within the firm about work-life balance, navigating the path to partnership, harnessing leadership opportunities, and other impactful topics.
“The AICPA and GWSCPA Women to Watch Award is a tremendous honor,” said Wiernicki. “Female CPAs play a critical role in the success and vitality of the accounting profession. I am proud to help create growth opportunities and leadership paths for inspired young professionals, as well as be recognized among such an esteemed group.”
Wiernicki’s passion for leadership also extends to her local community. Some of her many accomplishments include serving on the steering committee responsible for executing presenting at the American Red Cross’ “In the Bag” event since 2010, as well as serving in various leadership roles with The Women’s Center, which is dedicated to improving the psychological, career, financial, and legal well-being of women, men, and families in the D.C. metropolitan region.
“Kathy is very deserving of the Women to Watch honor. She is on the forefront of important issues impacting women’s ability to create meaningful and successful careers in the public accounting industry. She is a trailblazer and a role model,” commented Todd Stokes, Baker Tilly’s D.C. area managing partner.
In addition to Wiernicki’s recognition, Jessica Mastropietro, senior manager, Lisa Steele, partner, and Christine Trunnell, director, with Baker Tilly D.C.’s office were highlighted with nominations in the Emerging Leaders category. The Women to Watch recipients were honored at an awards luncheon on October 24, 2014 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington.
