Our commitment to Gleaners |
Baker Tilly is delighted to support Gleaners Community Food Bank in their mission to “nourish communities by feeding hungry people." Founded in 1977, Gleaners is one of the oldest and largest food banks in the country. In 2010, Gleaners distributed more than 36.9 million pounds of donated and purchased food to more than 484 soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, senior homes, and other partner agencies that feed hungry people.
Baker Tilly understands true success in business is measured by more than just dollars and cents. It’s a matter of doing things that enrich the lives of those around us and the communities in which we live. After all, isn’t that the real bottom line? Our partnership with Gleaners gives us an opportunity to invest in the future of the metro Detroit area and give back to those in need.
Past Events
Hunger Hero Food Drive
Date: Aug. 11, 2010
Baker Tilly teamed up with Gleaners Community Food Bank to host a food drive Aug. 11 in the parking lot of its Southfield office.
The goal was to collect more than 2,000 pounds of food in one day for hungry people in southeast Michigan. Baker Tilly reached out to clients, colleagues, and community members to help reach its goal. More than 20 local businesses held their own food drives two weeks prior to the Aug. 11 collection. Baker Tilly staff members also visited about 1,200 homes in the area one week prior to the event to drop off flyers that asked residents to leave a bag full of nonperishable donation items on their doorstep Aug. 11. More than 50 Baker Tilly volunteers collected the donation items and brought them back to the office for Gleaners to collect.
The Baker Tilly volunteers doubled the goal by collecting 4,002 pounds of food. Baker Tilly also made a cash donation of more than $8,000. Together, that equals about 28,000 meals.

More than 350 guests gathered for the first annual Baker Tilly Iron Chef event. The competition featured local chefs Jamie and Jeremy Kalmus as they battled head-to-head in an iron chef-style competition.

A panel of judges critiqued each of the three courses and presented Chef Jeremy, executive chef at the No. VI Chophouse in Novi, MI, the coveted Iron Chef title at the end of the evening. Guests enjoyed not only the competition, but food and beverages provided by local restaurants and companies. There was also a silent auction, entertainment, and more.
Hosted by Jay Towers and Roop Raj of Fox 2 News, the event raised $20,000 for Gleaners, which equals 60,000 meals!
