Ian Halligan

Ian leads the international tax services team as part of the private wealth tax practice of Baker Tilly. Ian has more than 30 years of professional experience in providing international tax advice to expatriates, inpatriates and high-net-worth individuals with international tax issues. He started his career in London in 1989, and permanently moved to Chicago in 2001.

Deep knowledge of tax issues for high-net-worth individuals with cross-border tax issues including:

  • Inpatriation and expatriation/exit planning
  • Nonresident investors
  • Tax treaty planning
  • Foreign tax credit maximization for individuals and close-company shareholders including foreign-source income and expense allocations
  • Cross-border sale of investments from large privately owned companies to mutual funds
  • Tax planning for foreign pensions and trusts
  • Expatriation or, “exit tax” issues under §877A
  • Settlements under IRS Offshore Voluntary Compliance Program
