Federal Government Case Study

Challenge
A Federal agency responsible for paying healthcare claims on behalf of their constituents engaged Baker Tilly to examine the timeliness and accuracy with which claims were processed. The adjudication and payment of these claims is decentralized among offices around the country and leadership wanted to assess the design and effectiveness of the controls in place to support claims processing.

Approach
Baker Tilly worked with agency leadership to develop an audit plan to address all of the complex payment regulations. The team visited more than two dozen claims processing stations and interviewed a cross section of employees to understand the specific tools, processes and controls in place at each site. Finally, the team audited a sample of claims in each site to assess their compliance with the relevant payment methodologies and timeliness mandate.

Results
Baker Tilly provided a detailed report that examined the effectiveness of the claims processing stations that were audited. The team also gathered best practices from the sites that were visited and made recommendations to the program office on how to enhance the design and execution of the claims processing function within the agency.
